Lighting

Lighting definitely a must! Right now I'm working on my screened porch. I get great light all day. Just bought an "Ott light" since I couldn't work on my piece at night too. So far it has been great. Only problem is they are expensive. Trying to figure a mixture of cool and warm lights to get a balance for the studio that might be less cost.

The most important thing in a studio is sound. One must have great tunes to be creative. Okay, that's just my opinion. Seriously, lighting is important and that is easy. If you are looking for balanced light then find someone who has a spectrometer then balance your light. I just recently installed a couple of continuios light softboxes on manfrotto wall booms. The other piece of equipment you should consider is a Hughes easil. Also a area for cutting mat and such. In my studio there is a seperate room just for woodworking and another room which is temp and humidity controlled which houses all my prints. Have fun!

    1. Definitely the sound system! Some paintings I've gone through "The Lord of the Rings" and all seasons of "24". (Listening only. )
A Hughes easel would be great. I'll have to try and set some space and money aside to get one. I was able to meet the guy who builds them. His shop is close to my parents house in Florida. Worth the money!
The temp/humidity room is a great idea. I wouldn't have thought of that until I had ruined some of my prints.

  2. it looks like a pole barn from the images - i'd say walls will be your first priority! i have had 3 serious attempts at a studio space in the past, one was an enclosed front porch, another my basement and the third was in my barn. All three failed because there was not enough space. I think it's one of the most important needs to consider. I don't know how large your barn is? it looks reasonable. it's all about what you will be doing.

my current studio build is about 28 feet x 70 feet. It's the largest yet but i'm already feeling it may not be large enough. i'm doing video / photography / art / laser cutting /and also large format printing. i'm afraid once all the equipment is in it will again be too small. storage space is critical too then.

i'll send you the BEST lighting option - hands down later today.

  3. Space has always been one of my issues. This seems like it will be good for starting. It's a 21' x 60' divided in a fairly practical way so that the space will be suitable for what I need. Hopefully will get it organized to where everything is easy to get to when needed. Plan on one 11' x 25' area for painting and easels.

Need to run electric for outlets and extra lights. Then insulate and finish walls. First need to have concrete poured for the floors in 2 of the 11' x 25' areas.

I have some ideas for lighting, still trying to figure what will work best.
